2-30: The Road Ahead
Are We There Yet?
So often in life we imagine the moment when we’ll finally sit back and think that we’ve made it, that we’ve arrived at whatever, wherever, or whenever it is that we have been working so hard to reach. What if we never arrive? There is no red pin on the map, no definitive point where the world slows down and stops. The line keeps extending forward, fading over the horizon.
Just as you can live your life looking too often through the rearview mirror, you can also look too far ahead and miss what’s directly in front of you. You might be so set on what lies in the distance that you miss the beauty to your sides or the small wonders you passed only moments ago. You’re driving through a place you once dreamed of visiting, yet all you can see is the faint glow of a city further down the road.
If this sounds familiar, pause for a moment and evaluate where you stand. It’s likely that a former version of you wished for at least one thing about the life you have today. Maybe it is the city you now call home, the job that once felt impossible to get, or the relationship you hoped would find you.
Life challenges each of us differently. Even when you are dealt a setback, a leg down, a season of struggle, these moments shape the next version of who you are becoming. Progress is realizing that the line never stops moving and the map only continues to expand. These difficult stretches reveal strengths you didn’t know you had. They force you to reexamine your direction and ask whether the road you’re on still reflects who you want to be.
The roads we travel bend and fork without warning, yet they never stop. Each day presents us with decisions on which direction to head and how fast to move. Some days bring speed bumps that slow us to a crawl; other days we speed on the Autobahn to our hearts’ content. These shifts mirror the seasons of our lives. While our internal navigation might try to calculate the perfect route, no route is perfectly drawn. Accepting the twists and turns as part of the journey reshapes how we interpret pace, progress, and purpose.
If we never fully arrive, then simply traveling becomes our purpose. We commit to ourselves to take careful stock of our lives, of where and what we’ve been through to get to where we are, to roll the windows down and smell the roses. Be thankful for the surprise twists in the road, for they make you a better driver. Every snow storm or driving rain strengthens your resolve. Purpose is the decision to keep moving with clarity and intention, no matter the road ahead.
