Yesterday morning, I was gently awoken by Luna, a 7.5-pound golden doodle, which led me to a profound reflection on the nature of canine affection. As heartwarming as a kiss on the lips by any pooch is, it prompted me to contemplate love languages through the lens of how dogs show love to their owners. Dogs are sadly unable to express their love through one of the five love languages identified by Gary Chapman: words of affirmation. This absence, however, seems to amplify the other four love languages in dogs: acts of service, quality time, receiving gifts, and physical touch.
This concept is akin to playing Mario Kart, where choosing a specific cart often means sacrificing one attribute, like speed, to gain another, like handling. This trade-off, where a loss in one area leads to a gain in another, offers an intriguing perspective on our favorite puppy's expressions of love.
Another compelling analogy is the character Daredevil from the eponymous movie. Despite his blindness, Daredevil is a formidable superhero whose remaining senses are heightened to extraordinary levels, enabling him to 'see' in a unique way. Similarly, dogs, lacking the ability to express affection through words, might possess an intensified capacity to communicate and perceive love through their remaining love languages.
Acts of service in the canine world might include gestures like bringing their favorite toy, helping to calm their owner during stressful times, or simply being a loyal companion during daily activities. Physical touch is a vital language of love for dogs, encompassing not just petting or cuddling, but also the comfort found in proximity, the gentle nudge under the hand for more affection, or even sleeping at their owner's feet. Quality time is displayed through walks, playing fetch, or simply being in the same room as their human counterparts. Lastly, the idea of receiving gifts can be seen in the joy dogs exhibit when presented with treats, new toys, or even a cozy bed.
Understanding these non-verbal love languages in dogs enriches our interactions with them, allowing us to appreciate the unique ways in which our furry friends express their unwavering love and loyalty.
