During a recent run, I stumbled upon a serendipitous message that left me pondering the interconnectedness of life's events. I typically run three laps around this island and shortly after starting on my third lap, I see that someone walking in front of me has a hoodie on that reads: "THE FIRST TWO ARE GIVEN; THE LAST ONE IS EARNED." I read this and I asked myself if I was dreaming, because that was pretty weird. "What were the odds" I said to myself and "What does that even mean?" The hoodie had no other context on it and sadly I didn't see if there was a logo or brand or something on it either. Instead, I read it on lap three and yes, it did make me run just a little bit faster.
I briefly contemplated the peculiarity of the message. Then I reacted, continued running and interpreted it. It sounds ridiculous and doesn't impact much of anything whether I did the third lap a little bit faster or not. In fact, if it had said something like "The first two were tough, take the last one slow," I honestly may have slowed up and taken a breather.
While I don't have a definitive conclusion, as I've grown up I've come to appreciate things like that more. Perhaps these occurrences serve as the universe's gentle nudges, guiding us in unexpected directions. I'm not saying to go out of your way to find things like this, because you can't really do that, but simply to embrace when they do come up.
My encounter with the message on this random person's hoodie is one example of potentially many small or subliminal messages that we encounter each day. These spontaneous nudges are opportunities for us to contemplate the vast interconnectedness of events and our reactions to them.
